eThekwini Water & Sanitation worked with ALTERELEC on a pilot project designed to demonstrate energy recovery at a water reservoir. ALTERELEC designed and installed a compact 56 kW Micro-Hydroelectric Turbine Integration System at uMhlanga Rocks Reservoir 2.
The objective is to convert previously untapped hydraulic energy into locally available renewable electricity while preserving the core function of the water network.

ALTERELEC’s uMhlanga micro-turbine project is selected under the French sustainable cities in Africa programme.

Construction phase starts at uMhlanga Reservoir 2.
Commissioning
Commissioning is reported on 12 May 2023, followed by public presentation in September 2023.
